Waiting on God – Part I

Waiting on God!
This is a reprint of something I did awhile back – I am submitting it today in honor of my son Stephen, who waited many years in anticipation of meeting his lifelong companion – and after nearly three years of marriage, he and his beautiful wife Tiffany just had their first child – my fourteenth grandchild – Chloe Noelle! Stephen learned the value of waiting – and I’m sure he would agree with me – it has been worth the wait!

“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as an eagle, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

There is a method in learning to wait upon God. Though the pathway may not be clear, and the time it takes to travel it may be long, the benefits are sure according to the word of God. Psalm 25:5 (NIV) says, “guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Learning to wait upon God to move is a process that only comes by drinking in deeply the truth that is able to strengthen you as the adversary seeks to steal God’s promises from your life.

People and circumstances both are always in opposition to the promises we are holding fast to. Just when we think we have our faith secure, we find those doubting Thomas’s or the changes in our circumstances that breed doubt and unbelief. We must learn that there are times that even our daily provision will be under attack, Jeremiah 14:22 (NIV) says, “Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers? No, it is you, O Lord our god. Therefore our hope is in you, for you are the one who does all this.” We need to continually speak out God’s word, never giving place to the lies of the adversary (or those he uses).

Prayer is the first key to maintaining a proper waiting position. Praying our hopes, our dreams, even confessing our fears and our doubts, brings us into a position where our soul can be free while we wait. While we pray, we must also confess God’s word. Psalms 130:5 (NIV)says, “ I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.” In addition to praying, the Bible expects for us to watch in hope. We confess those things we believe – whether we believe in faith or it to come to pass, or whether we hold to doubts that come from fear. Micah 7:7 (NIV) says, “But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior, my God will hear me.”

The story has been told of a people who were waiting for much needed rain to come to their village. They prayed and prayed. Yet, there was only one who brought an umbrella. As we pray, we must watch with anticipation, as the author of Hebrews says in Hebrews 10:23 (NIV), “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

Part II will be printed on tomorrow.
