Today I attended the high school graduation of my second oldes granddaughter. It was very different from the graduations of my last two children – even though they went to the same school and their graduations were just a few years ago! Yes, the last vestigages of old-fashioned decorum were gone (no longer silence when the names were called) – and there was no traditional speaker to give words of encouragement. Yet this graduation had some components that gave me to know that all is not lost – there is hope for this generation – in fact – a great deal of hope!
For this year’s speakers were in the person of three young women – one the Student Council president; the second, the salutorian, and the third, the valedictorian ( by the way one young woman was going to Yale, and another to John Hopkins). And each one was better than the one before. They were awesome – so cool, calm, and collected as they laid out the truth and took a moral and social position that few adults would do! And there were nuggets of wisdom in their speeches that went beyond their years. I thought how true the scripture which says:
“The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”
Psalm 33:11 (KJV)
In point of fact I could hear me reciting a verse I often begin with,
“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations amaryl
.” Psalm 105:5 (KJV)
Yes, dire statistics that speak of this generation may be portraying all kinds of things that make you wonder if this generation will be able to carry us through this new millenium. I can tell you if these three young women are anywhere around – all is not lost! And the good news is that there are plenty more where they came from. They may look different, act different, even sometimes to the point of causing us to quesetion whether they are of the same species – but if we can get past the latest fashion and listen to them then we will be like Peter when he received perhaps the revelation that had the greatest impact for us:
“Peter fairly exploded with his good news: “It’s God’s own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favorites! It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from—if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open. The Message he sent to the children of Israel—that through Jesus Christ everything is being put together again—well, he’s doing it everywhere, among everyone.” Acts 10:34-37 (MSG
)
God used people in my generation, the Woodstock generation – and many turned from the drugs and the sexual revoluation to become preachers and teachers strong in the word and in the power of His might! And God will use this generation – if we pray – to be even mightier, even more spirit-filled, even more prone to do signs and wonders.
All is not lost – and that which is lost – if we pray – God will find it!
God Bless You,
Maria
