“Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. And she said to her husband, “Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly. Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.”
The story of Elisha and the Shunammite woman is a familiar story. We know that she extended hospitality to him and his servant Gehazi when he came to Shunem. In fact, she asked her husband if she could fix a room for Elisha complete with the comforts of home for him when he came.
Elisha appreciated the kindness extended to him and he wanted to do something for this woman. After calling her to come to him, he asked if he could speak to someone in the government in her behalf. She said she did not need any special favors. So Elisha asked Gehazi what he could do for the woman. He told Elisha that she was barren and her husband was old. Elisha told the Shunammite woman that the next year she would have a child. Her reply was interesting:
“O my master, O Holy Man,” she said, “don’t play games with me, teasing me with such fantasies!” 2 Kings 4:10b (MSG)
This woman did not want to have false hopes. She had learned to deal with her barren condition, what she didn’t want was to be led into a dreamworld that would cause her pain if it was not true. But as sure as he said it, the next year at that time, she indeed had a son. Mt 10:41 says:
“He who receives and welcomes and accepts a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he who receives and welcomes and accepts a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.” Mt: 10:41 (AMP)
God used the man of God to speak a prophetic blessing into the life of this Shunammite woman and her husband, but that was only part of the blessing – we will see that the blessing continued for this Shunammite woman and her son and also there are inherent blessings in this story that will bless all who can receive the spiritual principles packed therein.
