Victor or Victim? by Evangelan (Van) Shepherd

One day I was sitting and reflecting on all of the different trials and lots in life. I don’t know why some have cancer, and others don’t. I don’t know why some have marriage troubles that end in divorce and others don’t. I don’t know why some have been molested and others have not. I don’t know why some have hypertension and others don’t. I don’t know why some have to battle homosexuality and others don’t. I don’t know why some have financial difficulties and others don’t. I don’t know why we have so many different lots in life, but I do know that we can be an overcomer.

I realized that many times when things happen, we often ask the question why? Why was I born into this family? Why do I have to endure this or that? These questions can sometimes send us on a never ending search for the answer to the WHYS in our lives. However we do not need to search for the Why answer, but to refocus our attention to HOW? How can I overcome this lot in life and be victorious? Our lots in life are not something that we asked for; if we had a choice in the matters of our lives, we would have a picture perfect life – full of ups and never downs. Full of all good things and never any bad or tough situations. However, our Master, Jesus Christ told us that, ” In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Psalms 34:19 states,” Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. Notice that this scripture says God delivers us out of them ALL – not some, but All. Have you ever known anyone who had the same problems in life as you, but the pressure of that lot in life brought that person down to ruins. It may have even caused them to resort to drinking, sexual promiscuity, drugs, people pleasing, mental disorders, etc.., and maybe you were once in one of these categories, but you overcame. And now you stand firm and bold in the LORD, telling your testimony.

1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us,” No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he will never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll ALWAYS be there to help you come through it” (The Message).

Imagine being given a lot in life where Jehovah God would love to show Himself strong. Imagine that his eyes are running to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in your life (2 Chronicles 16:9). He would love to show the world that you have a God who helps you to overcome and not be overtaken. This is what makes the difference between trampling over the circumstance and crushing it under your feet, and being trampled over by the circumstance. Have you ever thought about, maybe this lot was given, so that God could show himself strong?

Exodus 13:9 says,”for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.” We know that Egypt represents bondage, and God can bring you out of your Egypt. We were never promised that we would not have problems, in fact Jesus said just the opposite. But He did not leave us without a way of escape.

Don’t let the lot that you were given take you out. Know that with God you can rest in him and have confidence that this too shall pass. I am reminded of an old hymn, What a friend we have in Jesus. All our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Oh what peace we often forfeit, Oh what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

God Bless You!
