A very interesting story caught my eye today on Yahoo news. Its title was: “The Meaning of the $1 bill symbols. I read the story and learned something new today. Naturally I had looked at the symbols many times and yet never once did I dig into finding out what they meant – please don’t tell anyone I am a History major!
The article explained that the symbols were the two sides of the Great Seal of the United States that date back to a resolution passed on July 4, 1776 by the Continental Congress, even though it wasn’t approved until 1782 due to disagreements. I’m not going into the meaning of both symbols (you can go to Mental-floss blog for the full story), but I do want to insert the quotation regarding the pyramind:
The pyramid has 13 steps – the designers apparently never got tired of the 13 motif – and the Roman numeral for 1776 is emblazoned across the bottom. The all-seeing Eye of Providence at the top of the pyramid symbolizes the divine help the early Americans needed in establishing the new country. The pyramid itself symbolizes strength and durability.
The divine overtones don’t stop with the unblinking eye, though. The Latin motto Annuit Ceptis appears over the pyramid; it translates into “He [God] has favored our undertaking.” The scroll underneath the pyramid reads Novus Ordo Seclorum, or “A new order of the ages,” which was meant to signify the dawn of the new American era. We have been admonishing the Body of Christ to take back the things that the enemy has stolen from us. As a former history teacher who even today deals with history teachers, I don’t think this bit of information would hit the average classroom. In fact, too many teachers make mockery of the Puritans and Pilgrims and denigrate them as corrupt thieves who stole the Indians land from them. Now I don’t want to get into a debate on this topic, but what I do want to acknowledge is that I believe that God had both a Hand and a Plan in the founding of this nation – and though I am under no illusion that there were many devious, underhanded and cut-throat people that participated in stealing land and many other criminal acts – I still believe that the freedom and liberty that we still experience today are a result of the prayers and diligence of those who were steadfast in their faith and brought that faith into the laws of the land.
Today there are groups trying to tear up courthouses that bear inscriptions of the Ten Commandments and other symbols and references associated with the Word of God. Is there such hatred for these references, that part of our history be destroyed?
For those who believe:
10-13The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along. Who ever knows what you’re thinking and planning except you yourself? The same with God—except that he not only knows what he’s thinking, but he lets us in on it. God offers a full report on the gifts of life and salvation that he is giving us. We don’t have to rely on the world’s guesses and opinions. We didn’t learn this by reading books or going to school; we learned it from God, who taught us person-to-person through Jesus, and we’re passing it on to you in the same firsthand, personal way. 1 Corinthians 2: 11-13 (MSG)
