“The Lord who made you and helps you says:
Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant,
O dear Israel, my chosen one.
For I will pour out water to quench your thirst
and to irrigate your parched fields.
And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants,
and my blessing on your children.
They will thrive like watered grass,
like willows on a riverbank. Isaiah 44: 2-4 NLT
I went to see my Dad today in the hospital. I was astounded by the difference a little hydration can make. Feeding him fluids through the IV had caused him to look and act like a different man! But I noticed something else. When I quoted for him the 23rd Psalm, and quoted a familiar hymn, “It is Well With My Soul” and then prayed a prayer of faith for salvation – all the while holding his hand – well what water couldn’t do – those things did! For all of you who prayed, I thank you for I see God is granting him presence of mind to determine his eternal destiny.
By the end of our two-hour visit his unintelligible words, were very clear – his facial expressions reflected his sardonic brand of humor; water plus the word plus love brought about a measure of restoration. This reminded me of a song which has as part of the lyrics,
“I thirst for you – I thirst for you – in a dry and weary land – I’m longing for your hand – I thirst for you!”
One of the best places we can be in – is to be thirsty! To be so thirsty that we will seek God’s face until He pours out water to quench our thirst. We often sang the song in church, ” Send down the rain, send down the rain, send down the latter rain. We need the rain, we need the rain, we need the latter rain.” For years I sang it without fully comprehending what it meant. Until that day came when I had been in the desert so long, not hearing from God, not knowing what to do next, dry in my spirit and my soul – and I begged God for the rain. To pour upon me His love, to refresh my parched soul with a touch of His Spirit, to rain down His presence so I could know that He was with me.
Too often I have taken the presence of the Lord for granted – and not acknowledged it as I should. The old expression, “you never miss your water till the well runs dry,” is so true. This day I want to say thank you Lord for your presence, for your love, for your spirit ever with me – leading me, guiding me, raining down upon me your love, your mercy, and your grace. Causing me to have hope in the midst of hopelessness – most of all assuring me that You will never leave me, never forsake me; thank you that I have this confidence not only for journeyning through this life, but because I trust you as my Savior -and believe the report – I know that this life is but a prelude to the life to come – we live – to live again! Thank you for watering my thirsty soul!
God Bless You,
Maria
