An Unexpected Sabbath Rest!

Wednesday was for me, an unexpected day of rest. Earlly that morning, the storms began and came through my block with a fury that knocked the lights out. It wasn’t my plan but I found the darkness lulling me into a place of still quietness. I couldn’t post, I had work to do, but it too required the computer – the house needed cleaning, but with the muggy temperature and no way to make the air stir, that didn’t seem like a good idea.

I read one day’s devotion – and then you know what happened next – out like a light! And even after waking up and seeing that there were still no electricity – it wasn’t long before I was out again- Now for some, napping may be a regular part of your day, and I salute you for that – you will probably live longer and be healthier. But for me, once I’m up – I’m usually up until way too late.I didn’t feel guilty about the napping – in fact I was reminded of something one of our Monday
Group Bible Study said she heard from a Christian Rabbi – we all need a sabbath rest. Even if it is not the designated day – for the Hebrews it was Saturday, for Christians, it’s Sunday – even if it is not possible to observe a sabbath on those days – we all need one day, set aside, to pray, to read scripture, to meditate, to rest before the Lord.

While I was awake I looked up the sabbath, and found that a man was put to death in the wilderness, because he did not observe the sabbath (thank God for grace). God wants us to reverence Him, and He wants us to reverence the temple that He lives in. When we honor the Lord by following the precription He has given us – we reap a multitude of unexpected rewards.

The storms raged nearly all day – during that time we prayed,we meditated, we rested. I have decided, I don’t want a storm to come to teach me a lesson, I’m going to pay more attention to the live-giving tips found in God’s Word!

55-56The women who had been companions of Jesus from Galilee followed along. They saw the tomb where Jesus’ body was placed. Then they went back to prepare burial spices and perfumes. They rested quietly on the Sabbath, as commanded.
