Flying is not my favorite form of travel. Even though I can appreciate the wonder of it all, and get a rush as the plane leaves the ground and ascends into the sky, I feel every change that the plane makes as it makes its’ journey to destination. I have been known to sit at alert, even on long flights, helping the pilot fly the plane.
It is because of my sensitivity to changes in my environment that I have made notes in regards different aircraft and different sizes of planes and the subsequent flying experience. I have also taken note, although I have no real knowledge of what it really means, the difference the crusing altitude makes in the overall flying experience.
One thing I have noticed, as a lay person, the larger the aircraft, usually the smoother the flight (although there have been exceptions – wind conditions and pilots also have a little bit to do with it); I have also noticed that when the plane is crusing at a higher altitude it seems as if the flight is smoother. These are observations from someone who did not pay much attention in Physics class!
Wanting to be on top of this, before I wrote it, I did look up in a few places what “cruising altitude” meant, and why there are variances in the cruising altitude. After reading my sources, I still don’t feel capable of teaching a lesson, but I did get confirmation that my gut level was correct – a higher cruising altitude, with wind conditions permitting, generally means there will be a smoother flight. I’m not going into the “whys” and “wherefores” here.
The point I want to make here is, when the question came to mind, as to “what is your cruising altitude” – I realized that this is a very important question as we “fly” through our journeys in this life. Most of us don’t have any trouble ascending into a new experience; we muster together all of our energy, our faith, and our hope and we “go for it”. Also, most of don’t have any problem when we come to the end of a difficult experience, we will go through insurmountable odds to complete something when the end is in view. It’s the part of the journey in the middle that usually gets us, and it is here that we need to determine what our cruising altitude is going to be. The higher we can maintain our cruise, the smoother the journey is going to be. When we can maintain a superior position over the “clouds” and not have to go “through the clouds” – it is no doubt that the “flight” will be smoother. And we all know, that the higher you can ascend into the sky, the closer you get to the “sun” which is never affected by the atmospheric conditions below it!
That has to be our goal, to maintain a “cruising altitude” as close to the SON, as we can get – and STAY THERE! Then, whether we’re on a comparable journey from coast to coast, or around the world, we will miss many of the bumpy jolts of flying low altitude.
Think about it – where can the great air traffic controllerof our soul plot your cruising altitude right now?

Maria
